How to Succeed at Assessment Centres

Performing well at an assessment centre requires good planning. Following these tips will increase your chances of success on the day.

How to Succeed at Assessment Centres

Prepare in Advance

Aim to understand the company and role inside out - its values, customer service standards and objectives. Think about how you're going to introduce yourself, both in the first session and during social activities. Ensure any presentation timings work - prepare a few extra points, and some you could cut if you run over time.

Have the Right Attitude

Dress professionally and take everything you need - identification, certificates or other paperwork. Be polite and friendly from the moment you arrive, and take a positive approach throughout. Ask questions and show genuine interest in the company - try to be as personable as possible.

Listen and Cooperate

Be open to the views of others, show your listening skills through body language, and help the group focus. Avoid the temptation to argue with, criticise or interrupt others - stand up for your views diplomatically. During team exercises, be the person who invites everyone to contribute and stays constructive.

Personal Impact

Don't be shy about your achievements - keep them specific to the role and organisation you're applying for. The more concise and clear you are, the more memorable you will be. Relax and let your personality shine, as assessors warm to individuality.
